This tuning system works by means of a tuning pin with a machine thread that is threaded into the plate. Each pin has a turned recess that accepts a forked lever, the other end of which holds the piano wire. When the tuning pin is turned it threads in or out of the plate. The shape of the lever is such that it works like a claw hammer, pivoting on its middle and prying the string into the desired position. Although a regular tuning hammer fits the pin, it is easier to use a T hammer since it takes very little effort to turn the pin.

This method is a little less confusing then the Mason & Hamlin design in that the layout of pins is in the conventional pattern of three per unison rather than a three string unison laid out into an alternating pattern of two, as in the Mason.

See the Brett Micrometer Piano and the Baker upright for more interesting variations on the all metal tuning systems.
