Hallet Davis and Company was a large company based in Boston. Large enough in fact to have a street named after them still in the area where the factory had been located.
This is an early upright of theirs. It is quite tall at around 59 inches and very, very heavy. Most uprights weigh about 700 lb. on the average but this one weighs close to 1000 lb. even though it only has a 3/4 plate.
Some of the early uprights had agraffes throughout including agraffes in the bridges (see the other Hallet Davis in the collection). This one has agraffes at the tuning pin end throughout but not on the bridges.
It has a very nice tone to it and a big bass due to its size. The case is burled walnut and black with very ornate carving on the legs and gold filled etching on the black areas.
